Trials

Since the 2nd year of the BeAware project, WP6 effort was concentrated to the preparation and the setup of the trials in real households. The D6.1 BeAware metrics for trials and validation together with the metrics for verification and validation of BeAware, provided the roadmap for trials related activities.

WP6 Roadmap

The main objective of WP6, i.e. to carry out trials aimed at iteratively developing the applications and studying the impact on consumption, has been splitted into different mid-term objectives, each of them mapped into a different phase of the project towards the setup and execution of the trials.

Picture below shows the high level WP6 roadmap, where the different deployment phases are highlighted:
Main target of Phase 0 was to have the BeAware system installed in controlled environments, for testing purposes. The output of this phase was to have the system ready to be installed in real households, i.e. to start the trials.

After completion of Phase 0, Phase 1 was devoted to the planning and execution of all the activities needed to setup and start the first BeAware trial, therefore to run the trial itself. The output of this phase was the validation of the first BeAware prototype, and the production of the D6.2 Results of BeAware First Trial.

Finally, starting from the outcomes of the first trial, therefore using as main input the results of the validation reported in the D6.2, all the activities needed to refine the system for the new trial has been planned and carried out in Phase 2, whose main targets are the setup and execution of the second trial. First output of this phase will be the validation and evaluation of the final. BeAware prototype (D6.3 – Results of BeAware second trial) and, subsequently, the assessment of the impact of the BeAware applications (D6.4 – Impact assessment of BeAware Applications).

As sketched in the above picture, each group of activities carried out in Phase 0 has a link with other work packages, and the overall target of this phase is the result of the continuous feedbacks and communication between WP6 and other work packages. Although preparatory activities (hardware testing, installations procedures testing, bug detection and reporting, verification), have been to some extend basically carried out in all the controlled environments, actually each test site has been mainly devoted to one or more specific aspects.

Activities carried out during Phase 1 have been devoted to the setup and running of the frist BeAware trial, with the main aim to validate the first BeAware prototype. Links with other work packages during this phase have been: with WP2, which provided the criteria and requirements for the selection of the most suitable households profiles, together with the tools and the methodologies for validation and evaluation of the user metrics (questionnaires, usability tasks, group interviews); with WP4 and WP5, by the mean of continuos feedbacks and bug reporting provided by WP6 and, consequently, bug fixing activities on WP4 and WP5 side. The output of this phase are the results of the validation and evaluation, reported  in the D6.2 Results of BeAware First Trial.

A summary of the results of the first BeAware Trial is available on the First Trial page.

Phase 2

Activities of Phase 2 are mainly devoted to:

Planning of the total number of households to be used during the second trial, and of the hardware provision (e.g. Mobile Phones, new BeAware sensors and Base Stations from WP3).

Recruitment of new households,  by taking into account the refined criteria and requirements, following the outcomes of the first Trial.

New installations, for a total of 5 households in Italy, 5 in Sweden and 2 in Finland.

Execution of the second trial, for final validation and evaluation, which will be the main output of this phase.

The results of the first BeAware trial have also highlighted the need for a refinement of the system functionalities, for what concerns both the improvement of the EnergyLife UI and the usability of the system, and the addition of new features (WP4/WP5).

As a consequence, WP6 testing activities have been planned and are currently carried out to verify the new system design.

The results of this final phase of the BeAware trials, will be reported in the deliverable D6.3– Results of BeAware second trial, for the final assessment of the impact of the BeAware applications (D6.4 – Impact assessment of BeAware Applications).

A summary of the activities for the second BeAware Trial is available on the Second Trial page.
