With the current global need to conserve energy and suppliers unable to give customers timely information and feedback on energy usage, there clearly is a need for real time energy monitoring system. Most current systems are either unreliable, unable to give real time feedback or very intrusive to install. BeAware tries to answer these problems both from platform and user interface side with an easily installable light weight solution.

The BeAware sensing platform

The Sensing Platform is the lowest level of BeAware solution, containing sensor network installed in users’ homes and data storage for storing and handling massive amounts of data.

The sensing network installed to household consists of:

* low power base station for gathering sensor data and handling communication to platform

* plug-in wireless sensors collecting high resolution information on energy consumption and power quality.

* wireless sensors for reading house main meter for overall consumption The wireless network operates over 433 MHz band, offering better range and lower consumption than normally used ZigBee-based solutions. Data is analyzed at 1 kHz frequency and communicated to basestation at 1/2 Hz frequency. Compared to normal solutions this allows the system to analyze the states and types of devices connection.

Sensing Platform offers several services to other parts of BeAware:

* Real time data access is offered to each user per sensor, allowing user to see changes in consumption only moments after switch is pressed. This data is available everywhere via web based technologies, whether user is at home or travelling.

* EnergyLife offers per user tailored smart advices based on user’s consumption data analysis. This offers things like standby mode detection, advicing user that certain device is used a lot etc.

* Ultra smart advice offer tailored tips based on both consumption habits and also power analysis. This includes things like detecting that device is breaking, fridge door has been left open or HVAC is used is too high settings.

Data storage

The data storage of sensing platform consist of computation cloud made of data receival agents, data storage plus analysis and visualization system. This system allows BeAware to offer almost real time view of measurement data while all arriving data can be analyzed for trigger conditions, like overconsumption, device state switch etc. Single BeAware installation generates up to 40 data points each second (1,25 billion measurements per year), so system has to be very scalable for each part, considering that large scale system in production should be able to handle hundreds of thousands of installations.
